Acoustic Guitar Questions & Answers

Question

I understand that fingering technique has a great deal to do with how quietly a performer can move up and down the fretboard. But are there other things I should consider to eliminate or reduce string screech? For example, are there certain kinds or brands of strings I should consider over others? Is there anything that can be applied to the strings to quiet them down? I play both acoustic and electric instruments, and I produce the most screech with my acoustic. - Dave

Answer

String squeaks are the nature of the beast with acoustic guitars. If you can learn to slightly lift your fingers off the strings while you change positions, it will dramatically decrease the amount of noise. You may also want to check out coated guitar strings. They feature a coating that provides increased protection of wound strings from perspiration, dirt, and body oils. They are also supposed to reduce string noise. Several companies make them now.

I wouldn't recommend putting anything on the strings as this will likely deaden the sound and will certainly attract dirt. In my opinion, a little string noise isn't all bad. It is just part of the guitar playing experience.
