Q & A
Acoustic Guitar Questions & Answers
Question
Hi, I'm new to acoustic/electric guitars. I just want to know are they just acoustic guitars which can be played through an amp or is it an electric guitar with acoustic sounds (so you can do all the electric stuff also?) - Pete
Answer
They are acoustic guitars with built-in preamps and pickups. They are designed to get an “acoustic” sound when plugged in to an acoustic amp or going direct into a PA system. The idea is to get the sound of an acoustic guitar when playing live at volumes louder than an unamplified acoustic can produce. They are not designed to get an “electric” sound or do "electric" stuff.
There is a new breed of guitars called "hybrid" guitars which are essentially electrics that aslo produce an "acoustic" tone. They are designed mainly to be plugged in and can do the "electric stuff."
